So you’ve been admitted to law school—congratulations! You’ve cleared a major hurdle, and your journey to becoming a lawyer is officially underway. But before day one of orientation, there’s a critical window of time that can make or break your first-year success.
Here’s the truth: Law school is unlike anything you’ve experienced before. The expectations are higher. The language is different. And the pace? Fast.
At FinalStep Legal Coaching, LLC, we work with incoming 1Ls every summer to help them avoid common pitfalls and walk into law school prepared—not panicked. Here are 5 essential things you can do right now to start strong:
1. Learn How to Read Like a Lawyer
Law school isn’t about memorizing facts—it’s about learning how to think. That begins with how you read. Casebooks are filled with dense, sometimes confusing opinions. You’ll need to read with purpose, extract rules, and understand legal reasoning. That takes practice.
Tip: Start by learning how to brief a case and spot the key components—facts, issue, rule, application, and conclusion.
2. Master the IRAC Structure
You’ll hear this acronym constantly: IRAC—Issue, Rule, Application, Conclusion. It’s the gold standard for legal analysis and exam writing. Learning this now gives you a major head start.
Tip: Try practicing with hypothetical questions. Even just one or two a week builds your muscle for legal writing.
3. Get Familiar with Legal Vocabulary
Legal English is its own dialect. Words like “tort,” “estoppel,” or “mens rea” might be new to you—but they’re foundational. Building this vocabulary now helps you follow class discussions more easily.

4. Prepare for Cold Calls
The Socratic method is real—and it can be intimidating. Professors will call on you without warning. Being prepared isn’t just about the right answer; it’s about staying calm, thinking clearly, and responding with structure.
Tip: Practice explaining case briefs aloud to yourself or a friend. Confidence comes with repetition.
5. Build a Weekly Study Plan
Time management is everything in law school. You’ll be juggling hundreds of pages of reading each week, plus outlining, review, and practice. Learn now how to block your time, prioritize tasks, and build a routine.
